Copper hits record $14,737 a tonne in September 2026 as tariff fears and tight supply drive rally
LME copper hit a record $14,737 a tonne in September 2026, up nearly 50% over the past year. Expectations of U.S. tariffs, tightening mine supply and sharp swings in global inventories have reshaped the market. The White House has paused a decision on copper import tariffs over concerns about higher costs for manufacturers, but uncertainty around a possible 15% tariff on refined copper under the Trump administration continues to support prices. In India, MCX copper fell nearly 3% on Thursday to around ₹1,378 per kg.

LME copper hits record $14,533 a ton as Trump tariff expectations and tight supply bite
Copper on the London Metal Exchange surged to a record $14,533 a ton, up 17% so far this year. Traders have been rushing shipments into the U.S. for months on expectations President Donald Trump could impose tariffs on imported refined copper. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index fell 0.7% for the week, though losses narrowed after strong US payrolls data on Friday lifted the implied odds of a September Fed rate hike to about 60%. The yen outperformed, rising about 2.4% against the dollar for its best week since July. Gains were driven by expectations that the Bank of Japan may raise its benchmark rate by a quarter point this month and keep the door open to faster hikes thereafter.

Yen slips to 160.20 per dollar as Fed tightening signals lift yields
The yen fell to 160.20 per dollar after the Federal Reserve chair signaled openness to raising interest rates, pushing up U.S. Treasury yields and the dollar. Japan’s 10-year government bond yield rose to a fresh 30-year high of 2.95% the same day. Markets are watching the upcoming G20 finance chiefs meeting for possible U.S. pressure on Japan to keep fiscal discipline and for the BOJ to raise rates.

Gift Nifty signals India stocks may open lower on 31 August; analysts flag 23,800–23,650 risk zone
Indian equities are expected to open lower on 31 August as weak global cues and renewed US-Iran tensions weigh on risk appetite. In the previous session, the Sensex rose 330 points to 77,264 and the Nifty 50 gained 84 points to 24,175. Brent climbed to $89.18 and WTI to $84.32 after US strikes near the Strait of Hormuz lifted supply-disruption concerns, according to the report.
