Apple faces lawsuit over counterfeit App Store crypto wallet tied to $1.8M Bitcoin theft
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
A lawsuit alleges an App Store fake wallet impersonated Sparrow and stole about $1.8M in BTC by extracting seed phrases, raising renewed concerns about mobile distribution-channel risk and custodial hygiene. The claim that Apple promoted the app in curated crypto collections could heighten scrutiny of platform gatekeeping and increase perceived friction for retail crypto adoption. Short-term, this is a negative trust signal for BTC-facing user flows and wallet onboarding.

Apple is being sued in California after users allegedly lost about $1.8 million in Bitcoin to a counterfeit wallet app distributed via the App Store.
Three plaintiffs filed the complaint on July 24, saying an app posing as "Sparrow Wallet" prompted them to enter their seed phrases and then transferred funds to attacker-controlled addresses. The filing notes that Sparrow Wallet is a desktop-only product and has never released an iOS version, meaning any "Sparrow" app on the App Store would be an impersonation.
According to the complaint, Apple's App Store featured the fake listing in curated crypto collections. The alleged losses ranged from 1.05 BTC to 7.4 BTC, occurring through mid-2025.
The suit also claims Sparrow's developer reported a similar fake in January 2024 and that Apple later moved to terminate his account after he attempted to warn users. Apple said it removed the impersonating apps and shut down the associated accounts.
