Citadel Securities Sees Surprise 25bp Fed Hike This Week
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Citadel Securities' macro strategy head flags risk of an unexpected 25 bp Fed hike this week, framing it as a renewed hawkish stance and a potential end to the "forward guidance" regime. With swaps assigning ~40% odds to a July move and energy-driven inflation risks still elevated, an earlier tightening could reprice rates and risk assets rapidly, pressuring liquidity-sensitive markets such as crypto.

BlockBeats reports that Frank Fliat, Citadel Securities' head of macro strategy, expects the Federal Reserve to deliver an unexpected 25-basis-point rate increase on Wednesday, July 28.
Fliat said a surprise move would underscore Fed Chair Walsh' commitment to price stability and reinforce the central bank's independence in setting monetary policy. He warned investors may once again be underestimating a renewed hawkish tilt.
He added that a hike this week could effectively bring the "forward guidance era" to a close, with the Fed no longer signaling policy decisions explicitly in advance. In rates markets, interest rate swaps currently imply roughly a 40% chance of a 25bp hike at this meeting, while traders have almost fully priced in one increase before September.
Citadel Securities argues that moving earlier would have a larger market impact than waiting until September. Fliat said an earlier tightening could reset expectations for the Fed' inflation response, shaping corporate pricing and wage demands and potentially reducing the amount of additional tightening ultimately needed.
Despite softer recent employment and inflation readings, Fliat said inflation risks remain elevated and the labor market is still steady. He also pointed to higher energy prices tied to the Middle East situation as increasing the odds of further tightening. While oil fell after the U.S. paused its daily airstrikes on Iran, crude is still up about 20% this month.
