MetaMask is proactively exiting ~17,000 staking validators (~523,000 ETH) after a security incident involving diverted block rewards to a Tornado Cash–funded address, highlighting operational and key-compromise risks in validator infrastructure. Although MetaMask says its staking is noncustodial, the reported exposure raises slashing and trust concerns, potentially pressuring ETH staking sentiment and increasing near-term uncertainty around validator stability.

MetaMask, one of the most widely used self-custodial crypto wallets, is proactively exiting staking validators impacted by a recent security incident.
On-chain researcher Kaden reported that roughly 17,000 validators—representing about 523,000 ETH—have already been exited, while around 821 potentially affected validators remain active.
Kaden also flagged 18 block rewards that were rerouted from their intended fee recipients to an address funded via Tornado Cash, generating an estimated 0.36 ETH for the attacker.
MetaMask said its staking product is non-custodial and that it does not control users' withdrawal keys. Kaden added that if validator signing keys were compromised, users could still face slashing risk.
