Crude Oil Rout Pressures Sugar as Ethanol Economics Fade

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Raw and white sugar futures fell to one-week lows as a >7% WTI crude drop weakened ethanol economics, incentivizing mills in Brazil and other producers to divert more cane toward sugar output. Improved Indian monsoon rains further lifted production expectations, adding near-term supply pressure. Weather risk from potential El Niño remains a swing factor, while ISO and USDA differ on 2026/27 balances, keeping medium-term fundamentals uncertain.

Raw sugar futures in New York (No. 11) and white sugar in London (No. 5) fell to one-week lows on Monday after WTI crude plunged more than 7% in a single session. The sharp drop in oil prices eroded ethanol profitability, encouraging mills in major producing countries such as Brazil and India to shift more cane toward sugar output. India's improved monsoon rainfall has lifted expectations for domestic sugar production. Market participants are also monitoring El Niño risks, which could disrupt cane yields across Brazil, India and Thailand. On the longer-term outlook, the International Sugar Organization (ISO) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) differ on whether the global sugar balance in 2026/27 will flip from surplus to deficit.
