Middle East conflict escalates; US-Iran strikes disrupt Strait of Hormuz shipping

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Escalating U.S.-Iran conflict is disrupting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for global crude flows, with vessel transits reportedly down and logistics strained. Reports of attacks on regional assets and heightened military activity increase near-term supply and transport risk premia across energy markets, tightening physical balances and raising volatility. Spillovers include broader risk-off positioning and pressure on regional currencies, highlighted by the Iranian rial's new low.

ChainThink report: September 3 — Market sources said tensions across the Middle East are intensifying. After U.S. military airstrikes, Iran said it struck U.S. assets in Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, and Erbil in Iraq, and claimed it had shot down 50 U.S. MQ-9 drones. U.S. strikes reportedly left 18 dead and 108 injured. Israel's defense minister said the United States is leading the operation against Iran and claimed Iran's nuclear program has been destroyed, adding that Israel is prepared to respond. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been heavily disrupted. Qatari and Emirati LNG cargoes are being transferred via ship-to-ship operations. On Monday, 17 million barrels of oil reportedly moved through the strait, while commercial transits over the past 10 days averaged about 13 vessels per day. Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry said Iran attacked its vessel "Siddiq". Iran also updated its list of vessels it deems in violation to 57. Against the backdrop of geopolitical stress, the Iranian rial weakened to a fresh record low versus the U.S. dollar, falling past the 2.2 million level.
