SADC-RTGS adds Angola’s kwanza as settlement currency in first expansion beyond the rand since 2013
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
SADC-RTGS has added Angola's kwanza as a settlement currency, marking the system's first expansion beyond the South African rand since 2013. The shift targets lower USD-conversion frictions, faster cross-border payments, and deeper regional trade integration, with plans to add more local currencies. It may gradually improve kwanza liquidity and intra-SADC transaction volumes, but Angola's central bank expects no near-term change to international reserves.

The Southern African Development Community real-time gross settlement system (SADC-RTGS) on Monday formally added Angola’s kwanza as a settlement currency, marking its first expansion beyond the South African rand since the platform launched in 2013. The move is aimed at cutting the costs and delays that come from converting intraregional trade into U.S. dollars and improving settlement efficiency. The system processed about $3.77 billion of trade and interbank cross-border transactions across its 15 member countries in 2025.
