Automakers Bet on EREVs as Extended-Range EV Models Target 2028 Launches
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Automakers' pivot toward extended-range EVs (EREVs) reflects slower-than-expected pure EV adoption and consumer sensitivity to charging constraints and fuel prices. The strategy keeps gasoline in the long-distance/large-vehicle use case, potentially stabilizing medium-term fuel demand expectations versus an all-EV trajectory. However, prior PHEV penetration remains low and pricing/education risks could limit near-term volume impact.

Several automakers say they plan to introduce extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) by the end of 2028, including Hyundai, Genesis, Ram, Jeep, Ford, and Volkswagen-backed Scout Motors. Ram’s 1500 REV is expected to arrive in early 2027 with more than 600 miles of range and an expected price of $60,000 to $100,000. Plug-in hybrids accounted for 1.4% of US vehicle sales in the second quarter of 2026, down from the year-earlier period, according to the Energy Information Administration. Stellantis has announced a $26 billion writedown while discontinuing its plug-in hybrid lineup, and Detroit’s Big Three no longer sell a traditional plug-in hybrid in the US.
