U.S. Treasury Weighs Tapping $950B TGA to Back Bigger Long-Dated Bond Buybacks
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Treasury's consideration of using its ~$950B Treasury General Account to finance larger buybacks of long-dated, off-the-run debt signals incremental demand support for the long end and an attempt to improve market liquidity. The step-up in buyback sizes (10–30Y) could compress term premia and reduce long-duration volatility, influencing rate-sensitive assets and curve dynamics in the near term.

The U.S. Treasury is exploring whether to use cash from its roughly $950 billion Treasury General Account (TGA) to help fund larger buybacks of long-dated government debt, CNBC reported, citing two senior Treasury officials.
The Treasury has already doubled the size of individual buybacks for off-the-run 10- to 30-year securities, raising them from $2 billion to at least $4 billion. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the operations could be even larger.
Officials did not specify how much of the TGA could be allocated to the program or provide a timeline, but said the funds are viewed as available for buybacks.
