Record $28B crypto options expiry shifts open interest to March, dominated by out-of-the-money calls

Today marks the largest crypto options expiry in history by notional value at around $28B, with 267,000 Bitcoin options (Put/Call ratio 0.35, max pain $95,000, notional value $23.6B) and 1.28M Ethereum options (Put/Call ratio 0.45, max pain $3,100, notional value $3.71B) expiring, Greeks live macro researcher @BTC__options said on Dec. 26. More than half of all options settled today, and after expiry March quarterly options became the largest position with over 30% of total open interest, mainly in out-of-the-money calls. The researcher added that this year's fourth-quarter market has been the weakest on record, and conditions are more suitable for option-selling strategies given industry cyclicality and weak sentiment.
