Russian Constitutional Court Reviews Citizens' Property Rights Over USDT

Russia's Constitutional Court is reviewing whether citizens hold property rights over stablecoins such as USDT, DLNews reports. Moscow resident Dmitry Timchenko lent 1,000 USDT in 2023 but faced refusal of repayment, with appeals to district, higher, and supreme courts all rejected on grounds that stablecoins fall outside the protected Digital Financial Assets category. Timchenko appealed to the Constitutional Court, arguing no other asset class in Russia faces such restrictions. The ruling, expected within weeks in a non-public format, is viewed as a significant precedent for judicial recognition of stablecoins in Russia, with regulatory experts noting fiat-pegged stablecoins like USDT do not qualify as Digital Financial Assets under Russian law.
