CFTC in Talks to Launch Spot Crypto Trading With Leverage on Regulated Exchanges as Early as December
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission is negotiating with regulated exchanges to introduce spot cryptocurrency trading with leverage as early as next month, Acting Chair Caroline Pham said on Nov. 10. Discussions involve designated contract markets under CFTC oversight, including CME, Cboe Futures Exchange, ICE Futures, Coinbase Derivatives, Kalshi, and Polymarket US, focusing on products featuring margin, leverage, and financing capabilities. Pham said the agency is utilizing existing authority under the Commodity Exchange Act, which mandates that retail commodity transactions involving leverage, margin, or financing must occur on regulated exchanges, while continuing to work with Congress on legislative clarity.
