Bitcoin Developers Integrate Quantum-Resistant BIP360; 6.51 Million BTC in Legacy Addresses at Risk
Bitcoin developers have officially integrated BIP360 into the Bitcoin Improvement Proposal repository, introducing a new quantum-resistant address format known as PaytoMerkleRoot (P2MR). This development addresses growing concerns regarding quantum computing threats to existing Bitcoin holdings. Approximately 6.51 million BTC, representing about 33% of the total supply, are currently held in legacy addresses deemed vulnerable to quantum attacks. This figure includes an estimated 1 million BTC associated with Satoshi Nakamoto's early P2PK addresses, which have exposed public keys. Concurrently, a separate proposal co-authored by Jameson Lopp suggests freezing funds in non-migrated legacy addresses by a specified deadline, a measure that has ignited significant debate within the Bitcoin community regarding its implications for user sovereignty and network security.
