Illinois OKs "0.2% digital asset transfer tax" starting Jan. 2027
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has signed the Digital Asset Tax Act, establishing a 0.2% levy on cryptocurrency transfers beginning in January 2027. The tax will be collected by exchanges that serve Illinois customers. The measure is structured as a transaction tax rather than a capital gains tax, meaning it applies whenever crypto is moved regardless of whether the transfer generates a profit—including transfers to a user's own wallet. Exchanges generating more than $100,000 in Illinois business will be required to collect the tax.
