U.S. becomes India’s largest LNG supplier in March–May 2026, overtaking Qatar
The U.S. became India’s biggest liquefied natural gas supplier during March–May 2026, supplying 1.5 million tonnes while Qatar shipped 0.1 mt, according to Kpler data. India’s cumulative LNG imports over the period fell 6.5% year on year to 5.8 mt, as Qatar’s share slid to 1.72% and the U.S. share rose to 25.86%. The West Asia conflict disrupted flows after the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed and QatarEnergy’s Ras Laffan facility was attacked. Indian buyers stepped up spot procurement, issuing tenders for 44 cargoes, while tighter supply pushed up Asian spot prices.
